Class projects with meaning
Ariana Sanchez Rivera (animal ecology) chose Iowa State to start her path to veterinary medicine because to her, it was the best institution of agriculture in the country. If she was going to be far away from her family in Puerto Rico, she was determined to have them know she was in a great place getting a good education that would prepare her for a career.
Her education and background collided in the best way possible through a Wildlife Care and Husbandry class. Students were assigned a project which required research on a topic of their own choosing but connected to class discussions. Ariana was able to conduct research on endangered species from her home island. Through the project, she was able to learn new things about native species and teach her peers and others about the richness of diversity in her home.
The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) welcomes students from across the United States and around the world. We connect students of all cultural backgrounds with a variety of people, services and opportunities to build and enhance your community while giving you a space to share your own background.
