Food security on a global scale

Grace Jakes

When first arriving at Iowa State, Grace Jakes (animal science, global resource systems) didn’t anticipate studying abroad. Grace didn’t think she could afford it and wasn’t sure how a study abroad experience would fit with her career goals or academic path.

At the same time, Grace was always interested in the role of agriculture in promoting food security and economic mobility. She learned about a study abroad program in Uganda that would give her the opportunity to explore her passion, make a difference and do something adventurous, outside of her comfort zone.

In the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, students have the opportunity to broaden their horizons through hands-on learning experiences outside of the classroom on a study abroad program. Donor funded scholarships are also available through an easy application process and help offset the cost of studying abroad.
